Akhir tahun 80 an Stephen Covey, penulis Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, membuat istilah baru sebagai lawan dari sikap reaktif, yaitu sikap “proaktif”. Istilah ini kemudian menjadi sangat populer di seluruh dunia.

Sikap reaktif adalah sikap seseorang yang gagal membuat pilihan respon dikala mendapatkan rangsangan (stimulus). Sederhananya adalah, bila seseorang selalu menjadi marah kalau dihina, maka orang tersebut dikatakan “reaktif” karena selalu memberikan tanggapan (respon) yang sama terhadap suatu rangsangan (stimulus).

7 Kebiasaan orang-orang yang sangat efektif

Efektif : Melakukan hal yang tepat (do right thing)
Efisien : Melakukan dengan tepat (do thing right)
Kebiasaan : Perilaku (behaviour) yang sering (berulang-ulang) dilakukan

• Character Ethic (Prinsip-prinsip dasar) 

Prinsip-prinsip dasar yang positif dan orang hanya dapat mengalami keberhasilan yang sejati dan kebahagiaan yang abadi bila mereka belajar mengintegrasikan prinsip-prinsip tersebut kedalam karakter dasar mereka. Contoh prinsip-prinsip dasar seperti : Integritas, Kerendahan Hati, Kesetiaan (loyal), Keadilan, Keberanian, Kesederhanaan, Kesopanan, dll.

• Personality Ethic (Sikap dan Perilaku) keberhasilan

merupakan suatu fungsi kepribadian, citra masyarakat, sikap dan perilaku, keterampilan dan teknik, yang melicinkan proses-proses interaksi manusia. Personality Ethic mengambil 2 jalan :
1. Teknik hubungan manusia dan masyarakat
2. Sikap mental positif
